While most of central Guangzhou climbs upward with glass towers, Ersha Island (二沙岛) stretches low across the water. Set right in the main channel of the Pearl River between Guangzhou Bridge and Haiyin Bridge, this 1.26-square-kilometre island belongs to Yuexiu District. There are no high-rise apartment towers or elevated expressways across its core. Instead, the island is packed with riverside lawns, cultural landmarks, modern sculpture gardens, and paved cycling tracks. For travelers, it offers the cleanest, most open panoramic view of Canton Tower and the Zhujiang New Town skyline from across the river.

The Chinese name is 二沙岛, and English maps label it Ersha Island. Search the Chinese name when booking ride-hailing cars or navigating subway apps.

How to get to Ersha Island

Getting to Ersha Island has become straightforward with recent transit additions:

Take Metro Line 12 directly to Ersha Island Station (二沙岛站). The station exits onto Yanyu Road on the north side of the island, placing you within a five-minute walk of the art museum and concert hall.

If you are already near Canton Tower in Haizhu District, you do not need to take the metro. Walk across Haixin Bridge (海心桥), a pedestrian-only arch bridge that spans the river directly from the tower’s north plaza to the eastern tip of Ersha Island. Crossing takes about ten minutes on foot with wide river breezes all the way.

From the Yuexiu old town area, several buses run onto the island. The 131A and 131B circular routes connect Xinghai Concert Hall station and Ersha East station with inner-city hubs, alongside lines 89 and 194. If walking from Line 5 at Wuyangcun Station, you can cross the pedestrian sidewalk on the Guangzhou Bridge approach, which takes around 15 minutes.

Xinghai Concert Hall and Guangdong Museum of Art

The cultural anchor of the island sits along Qingbo Road on the southern riverfront, where Xinghai Concert Hall and the Guangdong Museum of Art stand side by side.

Xinghai Concert Hall (星海音乐厅) opened in 1998, named in honor of the renowned Guangzhou-born composer Xian Xinghai. Its futuristic exterior features sweeping hyperbolic paraboloid concrete shells, resembling a giant swan resting along the Pearl River bank. Inside, it houses a premier 1,500-seat symphony hall and an intimate chamber music hall. Even without concert tickets, walking up the riverside plaza in the evening is a classic city experience. When lit up with vibrant purple and emerald hues, its curved facade reflects across the dark river water as cruise boats pass by.

Right next door at 38 Yanyu Road is the Ersha Island campus of the Guangdong Museum of Art (广东美术馆). This historic venue hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions, Lingnan painting retrospectives, and sculpture installations. Hours run from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Tuesday to Sunday (last entry at 4:30pm; closed on Mondays). Individual entry is free of charge with valid photo ID at security inspection. Note that Guangdong recently opened a massive new branch at the Greater Bay Area Art Center in Baietan; this Ersha Island location remains the original, quieter tree-shaded complex.

Directly south of both venues runs Qingbo Road’s waterfront promenade. A broad stone balustrade and old banyan trees provide deep shade, making this one of the coolest walks in central Guangzhou during humid summer afternoons.

Hongcheng Park and the best Canton Tower viewpoint

The eastern end of Ersha Island is a contiguous green corridor made up of Hongcheng Park (宏城公园), Ersha Island Art Park, and Ersha Island Sports Park.

Hongcheng Park is celebrated among local photographers as the single best vantage point for framing Canton Tower without foreground clutter. Looking east across the water, the entire slender profile of the tower rises clear above the riverbanks. Throughout spring and autumn, the park grounds are planted with rotating floral carpets of Iceland poppies, cosmos, and sunflowers. Capturing the bright flower blossoms in the foreground with Canton Tower behind them during sunset produces the quintessential Guangzhou postcard photograph.

Nearby Ersha Island Sports Park features free public outdoor fitness zones, smart exercise equipment with digital counters, and rubberized jogging tracks. Large central grassy lawns across the island welcome picnic blankets. On sunny weekend afternoons, local families gather here with folding chairs, kites, and takeout coffee.

Haixin Bridge and walking the riverbanks

At the eastern tip, Haixin Bridge links Ersha Island with Canton Tower. Opened in June 2021, it is the world’s longest and widest curved cable-stayed pedestrian bridge. The pedestrian deck is split into a western direct thoroughfare and an eastern stepped leisure deck shaded by canopies. Crossing the bridge offers dramatic unobstructed vistas of Zhujiang New Town's East and West Towers. The bridge opens daily from 7:00am to 11:00pm and currently operates without reservation requirements.

At the western tip of the island, a different chapter of Guangzhou history remains intact. Here stands the historic Yiyangyuan (颐养园) complex with its Republican-era villas, yellow stucco walls, glazed green ceramic roofs, and century-old red kapok trees. During March and April, the vivid red kapok blossoms drop onto the waterfront path, recalling Guangzhou's early 20th-century residential ambiance.

A continuous, flat greenway circuits the entire perimeter of the island. Renting a shared bike to cycle the 6.5-kilometre outer loop takes about 30 to 40 minutes, while a leisurely walk along the southern riverfront takes about an hour.

How to fit Ersha Island into your day

Ersha Island fits logically into the modern skyline and riverfront day of your trip:

Arrive in the mid-afternoon around 3:00pm via Line 12 at Ersha Island Station. Spend an hour exploring contemporary exhibitions at the Guangdong Museum of Art. At 4:30pm, take a relaxed stroll eastward along Qingbo Road, admiring the Xinghai Concert Hall architecture and the river scenery.

By 5:30pm, settle onto the grass at Hongcheng Park to watch the sunset paint the sky behind Canton Tower and the high-rises of Zhujiang New Town. As dusk falls around 7:00pm, the city’s architectural lighting turns on across the river.

From the park, simply walk across Haixin Bridge to reach the base of Canton Tower. From there, you can board an evening vessel for the Pearl River Night Cruise or head up to the Guangdong Museum and Huacheng Square across the river for dinner. This flow requires zero backtracking and makes the most of the golden hour. It integrates directly into Day 2 of our 3–4 day itinerary.

When to go

For museum visits, weekday mornings or early afternoons are the quietest. For photography and riverside leisure, arrive between 4:30pm and 7:30pm to catch both late-afternoon golden light and illuminated night cityscapes.

Weekends and public holidays draw heavy crowds of picnickers to the central lawns, and bike-sharing docks can run empty by late afternoon. Plan to arrive slightly earlier or rely on metro connections.
